Ex-President of the Thyroid Department of SBEM and the Latin American Society of Thyroid (LATS), Dr. Denise Pires de Carvalho officially took over on July 2 the rector position at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She is the first woman to hold the rector position at the institution.
The induction ceremony took place in Brasilia and was attended by important figures from the University of Rio de Janeiro and the Minister of Education, Abraham Weintraub. Dr. Valéria Guimarães, ex-president of SBEM National, was present at the event and sent the information and videos to SBEM.
The new rector believes that the university will advance further, especially in the direction of technological innovation that Brazil needs. She points out that UFRJ has, if not one of the best, the largest technology park in the country. “The university has opened doors to further improve its technological development needed to contribute to the country’s teaching and research.”
At the ceremony, Dr. Denise spoke about the importance of the university and noted that UFRJ was the first higher education school in Brazil and is the largest federal university in the country. According to her, the objective is to lead the university to be among the 100 best in the world and become the best in Latin America.
