Opening Ceremony and First Highlights of ITC 2025

The official opening of the International Thyroid Congress took place on the evening of Thursday, June 19, with over 2,000 participants in attendance. Representatives from 76 countries are present, with notable delegations from Brazil, the United States, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Italy, and France.

The ITC’s multidisciplinary nature is evident in the participation of professionals from various fields, including endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, oncologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, basic scientists, epidemiologists, and others.

The opening session featured representatives from all participating societies — ETA (European Thyroid Association), ATA (American Thyroid Association), and AOTA (Asia & Oceania Thyroid Association): Dr. Janete Cerutti, LATS President; Dr. Ines Califano, LATS Secretary; Dr. Ana Luiza Maia, Chair of the Program Organizing Committee; Dr. Denise Pires de Carvalho, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee; Dr. Laura Fugazzola, ETA President; Dr. Kris Poppe, ETA Secretary; Dr. Jacqueline Jonklaas, ATA President; Dr. Christopher McCabe, ATA Secretary; Dr. Won Bae Kim, AOTA President; and Dr. Byeong-Cheol Ahn, AOTA Secretary.

Dr. Janete Cerutti opened the 17th ITC ceremony by welcoming the participants and emphasizing that this is a global and collaborative event, bringing together professionals from around the world every five years.

She acknowledged the remarkable work of Dr. Ana Luiza Maia, Chair of the Program Organizing Committee (POC), and Dr. Denise Pires de Carvalho, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), along with all members of the committees from each Scientific Society.

A timeline was presented, summarizing the history of all ITCs since 1927 (August 24–26 in Switzerland), and it was announced that the next ITC, in 2030, will be held in Europe. She mentioned several past congress presidents, including Prof. Geraldo Medeiros-Neto — one of the pioneers in the field and first LATS President — as well as Dr. Rui Maciel, Dr. Eduardo Prettel, and Dr. Doris Rosenthal.

“It is an honor to have you at this ceremony. You are our inspiration,” she said.

Dr. Ana Luiza Maia, Scientific Committee Chair, gave a brief overview of the planning process, which involved multiple meetings over the past five years to finalize the program. ITC 2025 received 692 abstracts from 59 countries.

Dr. Denise Pires de Carvalho, Chair of the LOC, highlighted LATS’s role in the ITC organization and emphasized the important space women occupy in leadership — notably Dr. Doris Rosenthal, the first female president of the Society.

“Since LATS was founded, we’ve had both men and women as presidents, which reflects the Society’s progress in gender equity”, she said.

She also made a point of thanking Dr. Patricia de Fátima Teixeira for leading and organizing a significant portion of ITC 2025.

Dr. Ashok Bhaseen, President of the Thyroid Federation International, participated in the ceremony and emphasized the organization’s mission to unite nations in the care and follow-up of patients with thyroid disorders. He outlined the programs currently being developed and invited congress attendees to connect with TFI.

LATS extends its gratitude to Dr. Fernanda Vaisman for hosting the opening ceremony.
